Arsenal ‘confident’ of agreeing deal to sign Joan García
Arsenal are reportedly ‘confident’ to finally sign Espanyol star Joan García, as per Football Insider.
After parting ways with Aaron Ramsdale last summer, the Gunners prioritised signing the Spaniard to replace the Englishman and deputise for David Raya.
They even submitted a formal proposal to seal the deal but Mikel Arteta’s side couldn’t find an agreement with the Catalan side so a move didn’t come to fruition before the deadline.
In the end, the North London club opted to hire Neto on loan from AFC Bournemouth. However, the 35-year-old is likely to leave the club next summer and Arsenal have seemingly already started planning to purchase a new goalkeeper.
Football Insider state that Arteta’s side remain keen on signing García and are now ‘confident’ to agree on a deal with Espanyol to finally lure him to the Emirates Stadium ahead of next campaign.
Garcia to Arsenal
The 23-year-old has a contract until 2028 with Espanyol and has a £25m release clause in his current contract. The La Liga club didn’t allow their star man to leave for anything less than that sum last summer and could stay firm on the price tag next summer as well.
Garcia, standing at 6ft 3in tall, is a highly talented player and possesses the potential to become a top-class goalkeeper in future. He is comfortable playing out from the back, can play the sweeper-keeper role, is an excellent shot-stopper and is also good in the air.
The Spaniard has been a key player for Espanyol in their quest for survival this campaign. In 23 La Liga matches, he has kept three clean-sheets with a 71% saving rate.
He even helped his side beat Real Madrid earlier this month by keeping a clean-sheet. Moreover, he kept a clean-sheet away against Atletico Madrid in La Liga earlier this season.
Garcia would be a great coup for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club can finally manage to secure his service in the upcoming transfer window to reinforce the goalkeeping department.
