Arsenal are reportedly prioritising signing Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

After taking over the managerial role at the Emirates Stadium back in 2019, Mikel Arteta has made the Gunners a Premier League title contender. They came very close to winning the title in the last two seasons but eventually failed to go all the way.

However, their performances this season suggest that they need to freshen up the squad once again next summer. Thomas Partey and Jorginho’s futures continue to hang in the balance as they have entered the final few months of their respective contracts, so the North London club will have to sign new midfielders next summer if the duo eventually leave.

It looks almost certain that Jorginho will leave as a free agent. So, Fichajes claim that Arsenal are planning to hire a new midfielder ahead of next campaign and have identified Zubimendi as the ‘main’ option. The Spaniard has a contract until 2027 with Real Sociedad and has a £50m release clause.

Liverpool expressed their interest in signing Zubimendi last summer, but the player eventually rejected a move to Anfield to stay at his boyhood club. But, it seems he is now ready to leave to take the next step in his career.

Zubimendi to Arsenal

Moreover, the Spanish outlet state that apart from signing a new midfielder, Arteta also wants to strengthen the centre-forward position, the wide areas and the goalkeeping department.

Nico Williams is his preferred option for the flank, while Joan García is for the goalkeeping department. Additionally, Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres and Ollie Watkins are on Arsenal’s wish-list to bolster the centre-forward position.

Zubimendi has established himself as one of the best midfielders in La Liga in recent times after ranking through La Real’s youth system. Moreover, he has also been a regular member of Spain national team and won the European Championship last summer.

Therefore, the 26-year-old would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium ahead of next season to strengthen the engine room.
