Arsenal make contact to sign Atalanta star Mateo Retegui
Arsenal have reportedly made contact with Atalanta over a deal to sign Mateo Retegui, as per French outlet Foot Mercato.
Following Gabriel Jesus’ season-ending knee injury, Mikel Arteta was left with Kai Havertz as the only centre-forward option. However, the German has now picked up a serious hamstring issue and his season is also over. Meaning, Arteta will have to end the campaign without a recognised striker.
It was thought that the North London club would attempt to sign a new striker in the recently concluded winter window. They even made a formal proposal to lure Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.
However, the Villans eventually rejected the offer and didn’t allow his departure. In the end, Arsenal opted not to purchase anyone before the deadline. But, it has widely been suggested that the Gunners are keen on finally hiring a new prolific goal-scorer next summer to reinforce the frontline.
A host of options have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium with Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko being among them.
Retegui to Arsenal
Now, Foot Mercato state that Arsenal are also interested in Retegui and have already made ‘contact’ with La Dea to secure his service. However, purchasing him won’t be straightforward as Manchester United are also in this race and have also held talks with the Italian side over this deal. Moreover, Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain are considering making a move for him as well.
Atalanta are reportedly prepared to let the Italian international leave the club if they receive an offer of around £42m from his potential suitors such as Arsenal.
The 25-year-old has been attracting the attention of big clubs around Europe having enjoyed a stellar campaign in Serie A thus far this season. He is currently the top scorer in the Italian top-flight with 20 goals and even netted four times against Hellas Verona at Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi in Serie A last weekend.
Retegui is set to enter the prime stage of his career and has already started showcasing his qualities on the bigger stage. Therefore, he could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal if they purchase him.
The Italian would even be a cheaper option than the other targets. But, it remains to be seen whether they eventually opt to lure him to the Emirates Stadium next summer.
