Arsenal working on deal to sign Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg
Arsenal are working on a deal to sign midfielder Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg.
This is chatter that most fans with Arsenal tickets have long wanted to hear—the club is having discussions with 18-year-old Sverre Nypan to make him an Arsenal player by the summer of this year.
Dialogue between the clubs and the players’ representatives is advancing as Arsenal tries to land the 18-year-old Norway youth international.
However, a firm decision on his future has yet to be made, and no agreements have been reached, meaning the situation remains open.
Nypan is regarded as one of the best prospects in Europe. He made his Norwegian league debut in 2022 at the age of 15. In May 2023, he became the youngest player to score in a League match for Rosenborg—just 16 years and 145 days old.
Since then, interest has been building from a host of top teams—and competition for his signature remains—but Arsenal are now attempting to press ahead and win the race.
City has also shown interest in him; several other big clubs in England are observing his movements.
Although regarded as a great prospect for the future, Nypan would be signed with a view to joining the first-team squad immediately. He operates in attacking midfield as a creative No 8 or No 10.
Buy now or wait for summer?
While much of the focus is on Arsenal improving their forward line this month, the work on the wider squad-building strategy continues.
Arsenal has a renewed focus on recruiting global emerging talent, and Nypan meets that long-term criteria while adding short-term depth to Mikel Arteta’s injury-hit squad.
The winter transfer window falls during the Norwegian off-season, so this month was always earmarked for a possible move.
Arsenal has a good relationship with Rosenborg and has sought to be respectful in its pursuit of Nypan, which it hopes will enable it to close a deal.
Joining Arsenal would see Nypan join up with his compatriot Martin Odegaard.
Nypan jumps off the page. Norway has another mighty prospect after Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard and Antonio Nusa.
The fans with Arsenal tickets know it and hope it will happen before the transfer window opens.
Nypan grew up in Trondheim, playing academy football locally for Nardo FK before joining Rosenborg in 2022. They are the town’s biggest club and, historically, the most successful side in Norwegian football.
Nypan was training with their first team at 14. He was a Norwegian under-21 international a year later.
He may not have been young enough to displace Odegaard as the youngest player in Eliteserien history — the Arsenal captain was 15 years and 118 days when he first appeared for Stromsgodset in 2014 — but his progress is no less remarkable.
Eight goals for Rosenborg during the 2024 season and a team-leading six assists helped him quickly capture the national interest.
Direct comparisons with Odegaard are tempting and not unreasonable, but Nypan is a more all-round midfielder. He can pass, carry, create and score goals, too, but he tends to occupy more areas of the pitch. Nypan is more of a No 8, less of a No 10, and plays with fewer flourishes.
Kieran Tierney Moves Out of London
As the Gunners look to make space for new players and a possible striker, they are clearly instructing players who do not see a future at the club.
Kieran Tierney is one of them. And he found himself a new contract – but in Scotland.
Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Kieran Tierney will move to Celtic from Arsenal this summer at the latest – and that fellow left-back Alex Valle’s loan from Barcelona is being cut short.
Tierney is out of contract with the Premier League club this summer, and Celtic hope to reach an agreement in January to bring the 27-year-old Scotland defender to the Scottish champions.
There had been speculation about Valle’s future should Tierney return to Celtic, with Italian club Como reportedly interested in taking the 20-year-old on loan for the rest of the season.
Fans with Arsenal tickets would attest to this move, as the 27-year-old hasn’t been the impactful player they expected him to become.
Tierney has made one start and four substitute appearances since returning to the first-team squad following injury last month, and Rodgers said: “He’s still, at this moment, an Arsenal player.
“We’ve agreed that it will take place in the summer. If we can do it beforehand, that would be great.
“I don’t want to speak too much about it with the greatest respect because he’s not a Celtic player with us now. But, if we were able to do it, of course, we would like to do that, but that’s out of our control now.”
Lewis-Skelly Red Card Overturned
Much to the fans’ satisfaction with Arsenal tickets, defender Myles Lewis-Skelly’s three-match ban – imposed for a red card at Wolves – has been overturned.
The Football Association confirmed that the Gunners appealed against the decision to send off the 18-year-old, and an independent regulatory commission upheld their claim of wrongful dismissal.
“We’re very happy that decision has been made,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said on Tuesday night on the eve of their final Champions League group game against Girona.
“The club has put all the evidence and everything it could together to defend our position, and it was pretty fast. It’s good to know today that’s helpful.
“Now we have more options because he’s going to be available, and that’s something very positive for the team.”
Fans were taken back when the referee showed Lewis-Skellyaight a red card after fouling Matt Doherty. Refereeel Oliver deemed it was foul play.
It was foul play, but questions were asked about whether a red card should have been shown for the incident. Most fans with Arsenal tickets took to social media to show their dissent, and this time around, it felt like it was within reason.
Doherty was just outside the Wolves box as he mounted a counter-attack in the 43rd minute. The decision was initially upheld by Darren England, the video assistant referee (VAR).
