Arsenal are reportedly ‘willing’ to spend big to sign Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

After being impressed by the Dutchman’s performances for Ajax Amsterdam, the Blaugrana opted to hire him by splashing a big fee back in 2019. The 27-year-old was expected to become the mainstay of the Catalan giants’ engine room for many years, but things haven’t panned out as anticipated.

So, Barcelona were ready to cash-in on him a few years ago and Manchester United came close to hiring him after agreeing on a deal in principle with the La Liga club. However, the move eventually didn’t come to fruition as De Jong refused to leave Barcelona.

The midfielder didn’t have a great time at Barcelona over the last few seasons but has been playing a key role under Hansi Flick this season after returning from his injury.

Now, Fichajes claim that although Flick considers De Jong a key player in his system, Barcelona haven’t opened talks with the player’s representatives to extend his current contract – which will expire at the end of next season. Therefore, they might be ready to sell him this summer to avoid losing him for free.

De Jong to Arsenal

Arsenal have registered their interest in signing him to bolster the engine room and are ‘willing’ to spend around £62m for him.

However, if the Blaugrana can’t tie him down to a fresh term over the coming months then they would be forced to sell him in a cut-price deal. Liverpool are also interested in the 27-year-old so purchasing him won’t be easy for Arsenal.

De Jong likes to play in a double midfield pivot role but is also comfortable in the holding midfield and box-to-box role. Moreover, he can provide cover in the centre-back position if needed.

Thomas Partey has been the first-choice holding midfield option for Arsenal and Jorginho is his backup. But, both have entered the final few months of their respective contracts.

De Jong would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal to bolster the midfield if they hire him. But, it remains to be seen whether they eventually opt to lure him to the Emirates Stadium next summer.
