Arteta keen on signing Maxim de Cuyper at Arsenal

By on March 7, 2025

Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen on signing Club Brugge star Maxim de Cuyper at Arsenal this summer, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The Gunners are currently well-stocked in their left-back position as they already have Riccardo Calafiori, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney.

Moreover, Jakub Kiwior and Jurrien Timber can also provide cover in this position if needed. However, the Polish has found it difficult to break into Arteta’s starting eleven since joining from Spezia.

Therefore, speculation surrounding his future has been emerging and he might be allowed to leave the club this summer. On the other hand, Tierney has entered the final few months of his current contract and is set to leave as a free agent at the end of this season.

Zinchenko might also be sold as he hasn’t been playing regularly this season and his injury problems have been one of the main issues behind it.

De Cuyper to Arsenal

So, Fichajes state that Arteta wants to add more depth in the left side of defence and has identified De Cuyper as a serious option having been impressed by his performances for Club Brugge this season.

The Gunners aren’t alone in this race as West Ham United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on hiring him. However, Arsenal are the most ‘determined’ to secure his service.

The 24-year-old, valued at around £10m by Transfermarkt, still has more than three and a half years left in his current contract. Therefore, the Belgian side aren’t in any rush to sell him but if a club of Arsenal’s stature formalise their interest then it will be difficult for Brugge to keep hold of him.

De Cuyper is an attack-minded left-back and can also provide cover on the opposite side if needed. He has had an excellent campaign this term, making five goal contributions and keeping seven clean sheets in 22 starts in the Pro League. He even scored against Aston Villa in the Champions League in midweek.

Therefore, the Belgian could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal if they eventually opt to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming transfer window.
