Arsenal plot surprise swoop to sign Lorenzo Lucca
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a surprise swoop to sign Udinese striker Lorenzo Lucca, as per Italian outlet Messaggero Veneto.
After becoming the Gunners’ boss back in 2019, Mikel Arteta won the FA Cup title quickly. However, he hasn’t been able to win any other silverware since.
The North London club came close to becoming the Premier League champions in the last two seasons but were pipped to the post by eventual winner Manchester City on both occasions.
So, Arsenal were keen on overcoming their more than two decades of Premier League title drought this term but are likely to lose the race once again and this time to Liverpool.
Therefore, it has been reported that the Emirates club are willing to spend big this summer to assemble a squad that can finally become the English champions.
Signing a new midfielder is on Arsenal’s agenda. However, strengthening the attack by hiring a new striker is also on Arteta’s to-do list this summer.
Lucca to Arsenal
A plethora of centre-forwards have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in recent months with Alexander Isak, Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres being among them.
Now, Messaggero Veneto claim that the North London club are also interested in Lucca and could make a concrete approach to secure his service ahead of next season.
Udinese are open to cashing-in on him for a fee of around £25m[€30m] plus bonuses with his current contract set to run until 2028.
However, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Atletico Madrid have also expressed their interest in the Italian having been impressed by his performances in Serie A this season. Therefore, it won’t be straightforward for Arteta’s side to get the deal done.
Lucca is a 6ft 7in tall striker and has enjoyed a good campaign this season, scoring 12 goals and notching up two assists in all competitions. Moreover, he was even selected to play for Italy in this international break.
Although Lucca would be a way cheaper option than their other centre-forward targets for Arsenal, there is a question mark whether the Italian possesses the necessary qualities to help Arsenal achieve their lofty ambitions. Therefore, Arteta’s side should look for more established options to strengthen the frontline.
