Wenger Wants Roberto Rosales To Replace Bacary Sagna

By on October 16, 2013

Arsene Wenger has earmarked FC Twente defender Roberto Rosales as a potential replacement for Bacary Sagna, according to reports.

Sagna is in the final year of his contract and is yet to agree terms over an extension. Several theories have been reported on what the issue is, but the general consensus seems to be that Sagna wants at least a two-year contract while Arsenal are only willing to offer a one-year extension – as is customary for players over 30.

With negotiations on-going, Sagna will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement in January and with the likes of Monaco and PSG said to be interested, there’s no wonder Arsene Wenger is drawing up a list of targets in-case the Frenchman opts to leave in the summer.

The Mail claim FC Twente ace Rosales has now put himself in the frame with Wenger believed to have been left impressed by the 24-year-old’s form this season.

Rosales has been excellent so far this campaign, helping Twente concede just five goals in nine games, while he got himself on the score-sheet in the Europa League against Tottenham.

The Venezuelan international is versatile and can play at right-back, right wing and left-back so would give us plenty of options if he did join the club. But Twente aren’t going to give him up without a fight and are understood to be lining up a new contract offer.

Personally, I’d like to see Sagna given a two-year deal. I think he’s proved he deserves it and we have Carl Jenkinson already waiting in the wings to take over. Sagna would be the perfect role model for Jenks to learn from for another year or two before being ready to command a regular first team place.

But we’ll have to get Sagna tied down quickly because I’m sure he’ll have plenty of clubs on the phone in January ready to offer him two or three year deals.
