Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

According to A Bola, the north London side are in a strong position to complete the deal.

The Gunners have been looking for a natural centre forward to add to their squad.

Mikel Merino has filled in recently, especially in the absence of Kai Havertz. However, manager Mikel Arteta is eager to bring in a striker who can lead the line more consistently.

Gyokeres has been in outstanding form since joining Sporting from Coventry City in the summer of 2023.

The Swedish international adapted quickly to life in Portugal and has been a constant threat in front of goal.

The 26-year-old scored 43 goals and assisted 15 times in 50 games last season. This term, he has already gone beyond that with 47 goals and 11 assists from just 46 matches.

Arsenal face competition from Chelsea

A Bola report that Arsenal are now prepared to make a move for the forward in the coming weeks.

The player is believed to view the Emirates Stadium as one of his top choices.

However, Arsenal are not the only Premier League club showing serious interest.

Chelsea remain in the picture and could yet challenge the Gunners for his signature.

The Blues have been targeting a new striker as well. They recently beat Manchester United to the signing of another Sporting talent, Geovany Quenda. Now, they are eyeing Gyokeres as their next attacking addition.

Gyokeres has a release clause of £86 million in his current deal with Sporting.

Despite that, it is believed there is a gentleman’s agreement in place that could see him leave for £60 million this summer, as per the report.

With both clubs ready to strengthen their attacking options, the battle for Gyokeres could be one of the key stories of the next transfer window.

Arsenal’s strong position and the player’s preference may give them the edge.
