Arsenal on the brink of £51m deal for Martin Zubimendi
Arsenal are on the verge of completing the signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, according to a report from Cadena SER.
The Gunners have been at the forefront in the chase for the Spanish midfielder, although Real Madrid were also keen on signing him for next season.
There had been some concerns over whether Zubimendi would choose a move to the Premier League with the Spanish giants circling.
Real Madrid have endured a disappointing campaign. They were knocked out of the Champions League by Arsenal and also lost to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.
Their hopes of winning silverware have been severely dented, pushing them to search for fresh quality in their midfield, with Zubimendi high on their wishlist.
However, Arsenal have faced their own challenges this season. Strengthening the midfield has remained Mikel Arteta’s top priority, with Zubimendi identified as the ideal addition.
Recent reports suggest that Real Madrid have started to lose faith in securing Zubimendi’s signature.
Arsenal prepare to activate release clause for Martin Zubimendi
Cadena SER reveals that during the traditional directors’ lunch held before the Champions League meeting between Arsenal and Madrid, the Gunners informed their counterparts they have ‘practically finalised’ the midfielder’s transfer.
Arsenal plan to activate Martin Zubimendi’s release clause, which stands at £51 million.
They believe the Spanish international can play a key role in their quest for major honours next season.
Zubimendi has often been compared to Manchester City’s Rodri for his calmness, ball control, and tactical awareness.
Mikel Arteta has admired him for a long time and sees him as the perfect fit to partner Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard.
Arsenal continue their Champions League journey and will face Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, 29th April at the Emirates Stadium.
They are determined to reach the final of the competition for only the second time in the club’s history.
