Wenger Confirms Sickening Injury Blow
Midfielder Abou Diaby has been dealt yet another injury blow with Arsene Wenger confirming he has suffered a set back in his recovery from a cruciate knee ligament injury.
Diaby ruptured his cruciate ligament in training last March and was initially ruled out for between 6-8 months.
He has slowly been trying to build up his fitness ahead of a potential return but the boss confirmed at his press conference on Friday that the 27-year-old has suffered a set back that required surgery after his knee kept flaring-up every time he did any physical activity.
Diaby will now be on the sidelines until March 2014 meaning he’ll have been out for an entire year. Wenger told reporters:
“He had a little key hole surgery again, on the the knee because his knee blew up every time he did something so it is now six months after the cruciate.
“He could not even jog yet so with new surgery it is a set back for him so competitive football cannot be played before March.” [source: Mirror]
This is the latest in a long-line of injury set backs for the Frenchman and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him hang up his boots.
His career has been decimated by serious injury and there is only so much the body, and mind, can take. It must be hugely frustrating for the midfielder to continually find himself on the treatment table.
He has 18 months left on his contract so you never know, he might get another chance to salvage his career but even though Wenger clearly rates him highly, Diaby can’t be relied upon and I don’t think he has any sort of long-term future at the club.
It’s a massive disappointment because he’s a huge talent and on his day, he’s one of the finest midfielder in the league, but he’ll go down as one of those players who was unable to fulfill his potential due to injury issues.
