Arsenal ‘Big Favourites’ To Sign £38m German – Wenger In Regular Contact With Player

By on December 1, 2013

Some interesting news coming out of Germany with reports claiming that Arsenal are in pole position to sign Julian Draxler, with boss Arsene Wenger understood to be in regular contact with the Schalke ace.

Draxler is one of the hottest properties in Europe right now and Arsenal, along with the likes of Chelsea and Man Utd, were strongly linked with a move for the midfielder in August before he signed a new contract.

The youngster has previously claimed he turned down a move to the Premier League in the summer as he wanted to remain in Germany in order to secure his place in Joachim Low’s World Cup squad, but a switch to England could be on the cards next summer and his contract has a £38m buy-out clause inserted into it.

Former Middlesbrough striker Jan Aage Fjortoft is now a journalist in Germany and he’s claimed that Arsenal are considered the ‘big favourites’ to sign the 20-year-old attacker, with Wenger said to be in regular contact about a switch to the Emirates.

Fjortoft made the claim after attending Schalke’s 3-0 win over Stuttgart on Saturday night, which suggests he may have heard whispers from someone inside the club. Incidentally, Draxler continued his fine form by grabbing an assist and won the home side a penalty during the game.

Fjortoft has a decent reputation in Germany and was the first to break the news that Mesut Ozil was joining from Real Madrid in the summer, so it’s sounding promising that we could land one of the most exciting young attackers in Europe.

Draxler hinted last month that’s he’s considering a move to Arsenal after revealing that he’s already spoken to Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Poldolski about life at the Emirates, saying:

“I’ve always said English teams are very big clubs and Arsenal are one of them. I sometimes speak to Mesut or Per about the team, about the club, and they always have good words.” [source: Express]

With a £38m release clause, he’s not going to come cheap, but he should be an excellent investment as he’s still just 20 and has his best years ahead of him. Under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger, he has the potential to become one of the very best. Finger crossed we can pull this one off next summer.

Do you rate Draxler? Would you like to see him come to Arsenal?
