How would a league win for Arsenal affect the World Cup?
A high-quality, high-success club environment can be the making of a footballer on an international level. Much as Thierry Henry’s 175 Premier League goals (still the third highest total for any Premier League player) helped prepare him to become a legend in a France shirt, so too could Premier League success for the current crop of Arsenal stars lead to richer spoils on an international level.
There’s no doubting we’ve suffered something of a blip in form of late after winning just one of our last four league games, but we’re still well and truly in the mix for the Premier League title, with each and every one of our competitors looking distinctly beatable at times. If we do go on and win the league, there’ll be a major positive impact on the players in our squad. Here are a few of the men who could change the course of the World Cup with the confidence boost of fresh Premier League victory under their belts.
Mesut Ozil – Germany
We’ve all been following the Gunners all season long, so we all know just how promising this man’s performances were looking earlier in the campaign. He just wasn’t there in that car crash of a match against Liverpool, and he’s not been looking himself since the Christmas break, with touches of the ball, goals and assists all decreasing in frequency. If we’re going to win the league, in all likelihood we’ll need to see some improvement in Ozil’s form, or another player stepping into his place. If we take the prize, this boost for Ozil could make Germany an even more daunting proposition than they were in qualifying, this is certainly reflected with the bookies odds, Coral have Germany as 11/2 joint favourites for the tournament.
Jack Wilshire – England
We can expect to see our young native star Jack Wilshire in England colours this summer, barring injury or extreme managerial oversight on the part of Roy Hodgson. Watching Wilshire play, it’s quite clear to see how much he wants to succeed. Whilst this can sometimes emerge unhelpfully in frustrated fouls and dejection, it indicates a drive and ambition that an at times rudderless England outfit direly need. With the confidence of the Premier League win on his side, this young man could flourish.
Olivier Giroud – France
France looked uncharacteristically flat during their qualifying campaign. However, if Olivier Giroud gets his eye in over the remainder of the club season, expect our neighbours from across the channel to mount a serious challenge in Brazil.
