RATINGS: My Ratings From Arsenal’s Embarrassing 6-0 Loss To Chelsea
That performance was an utter disgrace. Every player and the manager should be ashamed of themselves. In fact, they should donate their weeks wages to Sport Relief and refund the travelling fans.
Szczesny: 4/10 – You have to feel sorry for a keeper that was left so exposed as Szczesny was today, but he didn’t cover himself in glory either. Didn’t get near the first two, should have stopped the fifth and spilled a routine Luiz shot which almost made it 6.
Sagna: 4/10 – Wasn’t the worst player on the pitch, but was part of a horrid defensive performance.
Mertesacker: 4/10 – Simply couldn’t handle the pace and movement of Schurrle, Oscar, Hazard, et al. You have to question Wenger’s decision to play a high line which clearly doesn’t suit us, and particularly Mertesacker.
Koscielny: 3/10 – Possibly his worst half in an Arsenal shirt. Was nowhere for the first two goals and was replaced at the break. It’s not clear whether it was down to injury or poor form, but I suspect he may have picked up a knock.
Gibbs: 3/10 – Went AWOL for the first two goals with both coming from his side of defence, but was then wrongly dismissed when Ox handled in the area.
Arteta: 3/10 – As I suspected in my preview, Arteta’s lack of pace and power was badly exposed. Why Flamini didn’t start I will never know. The Spaniard simply didn’t have the legs to compete in the middle, and a perfect example was when he couldn’t track Oscar for the fourth.
Oxlade-Chamberlain: 3/10 – Has been in fine form of late but this was his worst performance in an Arsenal shirt. Everything that could have gone wrong, did. He gave away possession for the first and then slipped at the vital moment as Eto’o twisted him to score. Then inexplicably handled a shot that was going wide. By the laws of the game he should only have been shown a yellow as he wasn’t denying a goal-scoring opportunity, but thanks to the ref’s error he stayed on the pitch until he was replaced at half-time.
Rosicky: 5/10 – Maybe our best player on the day but he didn’t have much competition. He did give away possession for the fifth goal though and his passing was well below his usual standard.
Cazorla: 4/10 – He was at least working hard but was over-run by the power of the Chelsea midfield. Lost possession for the second goal and couldn’t cope with the physical presence of Luiz, Matic, etc.
Podolski: 4/10 – Didn’t do much before being replaced following the sending off early in the first half.
Giroud: 3/10 – Once again, he missed a vital chance in a big game. With the score at 0-0, he scuffed a shot when one-on-one with Cech. The keeper did well to save it but Giroud has to bury those chances when they come. Chelsea went up the other end and scored. We can’t compete at the very top without a top drawer striker, which Giroud sadly isn’t.
Subs:
Vermaelen: 5/10 – Was lucky to face a Chelsea team in second gear after the break.
Jenkinson: 4/10 – Fought hard but was still unable to cope with the Chelsea attack.
Flamini 5/10 – Should have started but it was all over by the time he came on. Missed a good chance to score midway through the second half but fluffed his header.
Wenger got his team and tactics wrong, but the players should still never lose a game 6-0 in that fashion. Not the way the boss should have ‘celebrated’ his 1,000th game in charge. It’s certainly one he, and the fans, are going to want to forget in a hurry. I’m off down the pub to drown my sorrows….
