Arsenal Dealt Blow In Pursuit Of €29m Ace – But Is There Still Hope?
Arsenal appear to have been dealt a huge blow in their pursuit of Sami Khedira with reports in Spain claiming that the midfielder has now decided he wants to stay at Real Madrid.
Speculation in recent days has linked us with a move for the 27-year-old with reports earlier this week claiming we were trying to trash out personal terms after supposedly agreeing a €29m deal with Madrid.
It has been previously suggested that Khedira – who has one year remaining on his contract – wanted out of the Bernabeu and had rejected the clubs offer of an extension.
However, El Confidential are now reporting that the German international has performed a u-turn and is regretting not signing the deal when it was put on the table back in October, and the player is apparently ready to ‘make a statement’ confirming he wants to remain with Madrid.
This news comes less than 24 hours after Khedira’s agent told the Telegraph that there had been no contact with Arsenal and insisted no terms had been agreed.
I personally don’t believe that we haven’t at least held initial talks with the players agent, but I sense that we were either being used to try and get a better deal out of Madrid, or the player has realised he won’t get a better deal elsewhere and is now trying to worm his way back in to the good books at the Bernabeu.
You have to read between the lines when it comes to transfers and things are very rarely black and white, so I’m guessing the agent has made a lot of noise to generate interest in his client for one reason or another, and is now back-tracking to try and secure a new deal with Madrid.
Still hope?
However, that’s not to say all hope isn’t lost, as El Confidential point out that Khedira’s games could have back-fired. Madrid confirmed the signing of Toni Kroos this morning so Khedira may very-well find out when he returns from his holiday’s next week that the contract offer from Madrid is no longer on the table and he’ll remain on the transfer list.
If that turns out to be the case, then no doubt Arsenal will still be interested and we would be in a much stronger bargaining position. We certainly need a powerful midfielder and Khedira proved at the World Cup just how good he is, so he’d be an excellent addition to the squad if we could pull it off.
The saga isn’t likely to end any time soon and we should know more after Khedira holds talks with Madrid next week, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the player is sold this summer and we’d have a great chance of luring him to the Emirates if he does leave Spain.
