Does This Mean Arsenal Have Missed Out On £24m Key Target?
Reports in Spain today claim that Arsenal could be set to miss out on Sami Khedira as the midfielder is keen on joining Bayern Munich on a free transfer next summer.
Khedira has emerged as our key central midfield target with speculation earlier this month suggesting that we were closing in on his signature after supposedly agreeing a £24m fee with Real Madrid.
However, the deal stalled after we refused to meet his wage demands – believed to be somewhere between £150,000 and £200,000-per-week – and now Spanish newspaper Marca are reporting that the 27-year-old has held talks with Bayern Munich over a potential move to the Allianz Arena.
Marca claim that Bayern have asked Khedira to see out the final year of his contract and make a free transfer move in 12 months time, and the midfielder is understood to be keen to return to Germany to play for the Bundesliga champions.
The deal would suit both parties as Bayern would pick up a world class midfielder for nothing, while as a free agent, Khedira would be able to demand the lucrative deal he craves.
So does this mean we’ve missed out? Well, not quiet yet. Real Madrid still have a lot to say in the matter and the fact is, they don’t want to let Khedira leave for nothing next summer, so it’s safe to say they would much rather do business with us now and sell for £24m.
However, the stumbling block over the his wages remains an issue and until we can find an agreement, there won’t be any deal.
It’s a bit of a stand-off situation and everyone will be waiting for the other party to blink first. I really don’t see Arsene paying £150,000-a-week for the midfielder, so unless he lowers his demands, he won’t be coming to the Emirates.
But he won’t be allowed to stay at Madrid without signing a new deal, and Bayern only want him for free next summer, so it’s impossible to say how this will turn out. My gut feeling is he’ll probably end up signing a new deal at Madrid, but we’ll have to wait and see how things go over the coming weeks….
