Chambers Injury Latest: Defender ‘Struggling’ To Be Passed Fit
It looks like Arsenal could be without yet another defender for tonight’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund with reports claiming this morning that Calum Chambers is ‘struggling’ to be passed fit.
The 19-year-old missed training on Monday morning after going down with tonsillitis but was on board the plane that flew in to Germany yesterday afternoon.
Arsene Wenger confirmed at his press conference last night that Chambers was rated at just 50:50 to be fit for the game, but it appears those odds have lengthened as the Mirror are reporting this morning that the youngster is ‘struggling’ to make it and is now a ‘serious doubt’.
Chambers was expected to come in at right-back and fill the void left by Mathieu Debuchy but if ruled out, Arsene is going to have to call upon untested youngster Hector Bellerin.
The boss talked-up the Spaniard yesterday and insists he’ll be able to handle the pressure if drafted into the team tonight:
“Bellerin is a boy with personality,”
“He’s not fazed by the pressure. That’s important when you’re a young boy. His transitional game is fantastic. He’s quick and his final ball is good. He lacks a bit of experience but he’s very dangerous.”
So if Chambers is ruled out, he’ll join fellow defenders Debuchy and Nacho Monreal on the sidelines, with the Spaniard missing the game with a minor back problem.
We started the season with just six senior defenders and fans were praying we’d steer clear of injuries, but just a month into the season and we head in to a game against Dortmund with potentially three out injured.
Kieran Gibbs and Laurent Koscielny have also nursed injuries this season, so it’s safe to say our defensive situation is a shambles. Arsene’s decision not to further strengthen the back-line in the summer looks like is already back-firing.
