TEAM: Arteta OUT! My Arsenal Team To Take On Aston Villa
Arsenal get back to Premier League action after a disappointing run-out in Europe when we take on Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon. This is the side I’d like to see Arsene go with.
I’ve seen some calls for Wojciech Szczesny to be dropped after a couple of mistakes, but I think that would be harsh. He’s hardly playing with a resolute defence in front of him and let’s not forget he kept us in the game for the first 40 minutes against Dortmund with some fine saves.
With Debuchy out, the boss has a void to fill at right-back. Hector Bellerin did okay in midweek but Calum Chambers would be the more sensible choice. He may only be a few months older but he has much more experience than the Spaniard. If it was a home game, I may consider keeping Bellerin in, but since it’s a tough away game that we have to win, I’d go with Chambers alongside Mertesacker, Koscielny and Gibbs.
Mikel Arteta had a nightmare in midweek and it was clear he either wasn’t match fit yet, or his legs have completely gone. Either way, despite his own limitations as a player, I’d bring Flamini back in.
Like many fans, I think it’s time Arsene ditched the 4-1-4-1 formation and reverted back to the 4-2-3-1. If fit, I’d play Wilshere alongside Flamini as Ramsey is out of form and doesn’t look fit yet. If Jack is ruled out because of his ankle injury, then obviously Ramsey should start.
Going back to the old formation would allow Mesut Ozil to play in his natural position, and I’d play the Ox out wide. He looks hungry and his pace would cause the hosts problems, and I think he’d give us more support in defence than Cazorla.
So this is how I’d line-up:
In reality, Arsene is likely to stick to his guns and play 4-1-4-1 with Ozil out wide again. It’s a complete waste and you can tell the German doesn’t enjoy playing out there, but the managers decision is final. Arsene knows though, right?
