Team News Round-Up: Walcott, Wilshere, Kos, Szczesny & Welbeck
It’s been a hectic day of team and injury news at Arsenal so I’ll bring you a round-up of how the squad is holding up heading into Wednesday night’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund.
The big news broke this morning that Laurent Koscielny took part in full training and Arsene soon confirmed at his press conference that the defender was in the squad to face the Germans.
It’s not clear whether Kos will be deemed fit enough to start but it’s a huge boost to have him back so soon, as he wasn’t expected to return until mid-December. Let’s just hope we haven’t rushed him back though.
Arsene also confirmed that Danny Welbeck will be in the squad tomorrow despite missing training on Tuesday morning with a minor hamstring issue, but the boss hasn’t decided whether to start him.
Unfortunately Wenger revealed that Theo Walcott and Wojciech Szczesny wont feature against Dortmund. Theo is still nursing a groin injury that he picked up while away with England while Wojciech has a rib complaint that he suffered against Man Utd at the weekend.
Jack Wilshere also picked up an ankle injury on Saturday and the boss confirmed that he’s suffered ‘a big ankle sprain’ and it looks like he’s facing another spell on the sidelines.
There is no fixed return date yet but we should know more once Jack sees a specialist next week.
Here is what Arsene told Arsenal.com:
on Laurent Koscielny…
He’s in the squad for tomorrow. It’s very good news because he was out for a while now and we are short in numbers defensively. It’s good to have his quality back.
on Szczesny, Wilshere, Walcott and Welbeck…
Welbeck is in the squad but Wilshere is out, Walcott is out for the same groin problem he came back with from England and Szczesny is out as well.
on Danny Welbeck’s chances of starting…
I don’t know, I have not decided yet.
And this is what he was quoted as saying to the Telegraph on Wilshere:
“On Jack I cannot give you any time schedule. He will be out a while. He must see a specialist next week to see how long he will be out.”
“He has a big ankle sprain and I don’t want to talk about it because I’m not a specialist medically,” he said.
“The first news is they have told us that he will be out for the next few games. For how long, we will need to see a specialist.”
So it’s a boost to have Koscielny back and a relief that Welbeck hasn’t suffered any serious problem, but it’s a major blow to lose Wilshere again.
He just doesn’t seem capable of steering clear of ankle injuries and there’s no doubt it’s hampering his progress on the pitch. Let’s hope for some positive news next week but I have a feeling we’re going to be without him until well in to December.
