TEAM NEWS: Wenger Gives Update On The Ox, Gibbs, Monreal & Szczesny
Arsene Wenger has been speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Southampton and has given an injury update on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs, Nacho Monreal and Wojciech Szczesny.
Monreal was forced off inside the opening 20 minutes of our win at West Brom on Saturday with a knee injury and Arsene has confirmed the Spaniard remains a doubt to face the Saints tomorrow.
Gibbs replaced Monreal at the weekend but also finished the game hobbling after sustaining a hip injury midway through the second half, so he too is facing a late fitness test.
We’d be facing a real problem at left-back if both players are ruled out but the boss is hopeful one of the duo will be able to feature.
Reports on Monday suggested that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is expected to be passed fit to play tomorrow despite suffering an ankle knock against West Brom, but Arsene says the winger is still a doubt for the game.
The injury looked like just a minor impact knock so I think The Ox will play, and after being left on the bench on Saturday, he could find himself back in the starting eleven.
Wojciech Szczesny will miss his third game in succession after failing to recover from a hip injury he sustained during our loss to Man Utd. With David Ospina still out, it means Emiliano Martinez will continue to deputise in goal and hopefully he can build on the two clean sheets he’s enjoyed over the past two games.
The other piece of injury news to come out of Wengers press conference is that Mathieu Debuchy and David Ospina are set to return to training next week.
Here’s what the boss had to say this morning:
