Arsenal Offered Chance To Sign €33m-Rated International
According to widespread reports, Arsenal have been offered the chance to sign Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao before tonight’s 11pm deadline.
Coentrao has fallen out-of-favour under Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu and has supposedly been told he’s free to find a new club.
The Daily Star are one of several media outlets who claim that Madrid have approached Arsenal (and Liverpool) and offered us the chance to sign the Portuguese international.
The paper suggests that Madrid initially quoted €33m (£25m) but they may have been prepared to lower that valuation in order to agree a deal.
However, it’s understood Arsene Wenger rejected the proposal as he feel’s his business is already done following the signing of Gabriel from Villarreal last week.
I’m a big fan of Coentrao and think he’d be an excellent signing for someone, but I’m not surprised in the slightest that the boss turned him down.
We already have Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal vying for the left-back role so there is no need to go spending over £20m on another full-back.
Perhaps it’s something we could revisit in the summer if Nacho wants a move back to Spain or if Wenger sees his future more at centre-back following his impressive display’s in the middle, but I don’t think this was ever something we’d consider for the winter window.
As I said earlier, I’m certainly not expecting any late deals involving Arsenal tonight….
